Frequently asked questions
What is the cost?
Each class has a base tuition cost and a supply fee. Tuition/Fees are collected each semester.
Are parents required to volunteer?
Each family is required to have a parent volunteer as an aide for at least 5 classes throughout the semester. We will always have 1 parent volunteer in every classroom for safety and transparency. If a family chooses not to volunteer, they can pay an opt-out fee of $50 per semester. Once you register for classes you will be sent an additional email so you can select your dates to volunteer.
Is this a drop off program?
Yes! This is a drop off program, but parents have the opportunity to stay on site if desired.
How does lunch work?
Lunch is not provided. All families are welcome to stay after student pick-up each day to eat a packed lunch and use the playground. These lunch hours will not be supervised by teachers, so parents must stay on site.
What are the safety and security procedures?
There are several elements to security at the Academy. After class has started, the doors will be locked so that no passers by can access the building. Background checks are required for all teachers, administrators, and parents on site. All teachers and administrators will also have a current CPR certification. Our Policies outline what students are not allowed to bring to class to prevent anything dangerous or hazardous from entering the classroom. Additionally, each classroom will have 1-2 parent volunteers for safety and transparency.
Will you be adding other grade levels and electives?
Yes! Our goal is to add a grade level every 1-2 years. We also have several electives and clubs that are in the works so we can offer more choice on class days, not solely Science, Social Studies, and Literature. Please sign up for our email list to get all the updates!
What if we miss a class day?
We understand that sickness and extenuating circumstances may cause some absences. If you will be absent for a class day, please send an email to tsamuels@commonwealthacademyky.org. Depending on the class and the curriculum licensing, we may be able to send some work home so your student can complete the week's missed material.
Is this a faith based or secular program?
We are welcoming of all faiths at the Commonwealth Academy! In order to accommodate as may students from our community as possible, we will remain a secular program and our curriculum will not have a faith component. In addition, if there are any topics in the curriculum that are controversial to any party, we will either cut those topics from the curriculum or inform parents beforehand so they can make an informed decision if they would like their student to learn that material. Transparency is very important to us, and we want to make sure everyone feels comfortable here!
Is there any required homework?
Most classes at the elementary level will not have any required homework. We may have some additional activities to do at home that will be optional! If there are any requirements outside of class, that will be noted on the class descriptions.
How does curriculum and instruction work for a mixed age classroom?
Each class includes 2 grade level years, for example K-1. In order to accommodate 2 different years of curriculum, we have both years already planned out. For each subject, the 2 years of curriculum are interchangeable, they do not build on each other. So if a student that enters K-1 starts on the Year 2 curriculum, they will not be behind or need to catch up in any way. We recognize that students a year apart may be on different levels as far as math skills, literacy, and general comprehension. That is okay! The teacher will present activities and projects that both ages can contribute towards. If a student of either age needs more challenge or more assistance in a certain area, the teacher will provide that.
How will I know what my student is learning?
This is very important to us at the Commonwealth Academy! Transparency in our curriculum and instruction is a high priority. To accommodate this, all curriculum that will be used will be listed and hyperlinked on our website for you to look over before you register. Many of them allow you to download a free sample. Some of our curricula do not allow us to send anything out as part of the licensing agreement, but if you would like to look over the curriculum in its entirety, please send us an email and we can schedule a time for you to do that on our computer. In addition, every class will have 1-2 parent volunteers. One of the best ways to know what your children are learning is to be in the class!
What does my student need to bring on class days?
We will keep all class materials and supplies in the classroom, so the only thing your student will need is a snack and water for break times. If you want to send your child with extra clothes that is fine as well.
My student has severe allergies, what accommodations can be made for them?
We are very sensitive to allergies at the Academy, and while we cannot guarantee an allergen free environment, we will do all we can to accommodate your child. If they have an EPI pen, please let us know and indicate on the registration form if they will be keeping it in a backpack or if you would like the teacher to store it for them. For the PreK and K-1 class we would prefer to store it with the teacher to prevent another student from accessing it. If the teacher is using food items for a project, we will make sure that you are aware of the ingredients ahead of time. If your child is highly sensitive to a food and cannot be around it at all, please let us know so we can inform the parents that any snacks must be free of that allergen.
What does my tuition cover?
Tuition covers the operating costs of Commonwealth Academy including our building fee, insurance, teacher compensation, background checks, CPR courses, classroom supplies, curriculum, and administrative costs such as our website.
